Healthy Start has given us a list of students in Upland who have wishes for Holiday Gifts. If you would like to pick a child, the list is behind my desk.

Last year UUSD staff and parents were able to provide gifts for over 1000 students and younger siblings.  This year Health Start already has about 925 low income children signed up to receive gifts.  Will you please consider providing gifts for these students again this year?    Health Start really needs your help!

Please think about purchasing gifts or gift cards for students.  Health Start is asking that gifts be valued at approximately $20.00.

UUSD LogoSeptember 15, 2009

Dear Parents,

As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduced the spread of H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu) in the Upland Unified School District. We want to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.

  • Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food, or unwashed utensils.

  • Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues, or using the elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is not available.

  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Farenheight, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, and feeling very tired. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.

  • Do not send children to school if they are sick.  Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.

For more information, visit www.flu.gov, or call 1-800-CDC-INFO for the most current information about the flu. You can also find more information about the flu in California at www.cdph.ca.gov or call San Bernardino County Department of Public Health at 1-800-782-4264.

We will notify you of any additional changes to our school's strategy to prevent the spread of flu. The safety of our students, staff, and community is our priority.

Sincerely,

Loren Thompson
Director of Student Services
Upland Unified School District
